One of the very first things you must figure out while planning your trip would be your prerogatives. You must be more detailed with yourself than just saying you want to fish. This may mean several different things to everyone embarking on the trip.

How are you going to catch your fish?

Are you fond to troll? Or drift? Fish in streams? Deep water fish?

People can be seen trolling in 60 feet of water believing the fish was only a few feet from the surface. Not a lot of option to catch anything this way. Be certain you know the kind of fishing your group favors and that the lake will extend it.

What do you want to spend for this fishing trip?

The cost you are prepared to spend will have a big affect on the kind of fishing trip you take.

How much can you really spend? Can you be comfortable in a tent or a shack if the lake has amazing fishing?

Or would you rather stay in a high quality lodge?

Do you want to prepare food yourself… or do you want the fishing pack to do the cooking?

And what about shower facilities? Are you willing to use a community shower or do you want a private shower and bath in your own cabin. Gentlemen, if you’re taking your spouse on this trip, make absolutely sure you consider this one! If you don’t, it could spoil an otherwise great trip.

Other considerations are how long the trip will be and the type of fish you are looking to catch. A trip to a fishing lodge on a lake with pan fish and bass will likely be much cheaper that a trip to Alaska or Northern Canada for arctic char.

So, if you actually want a best fishing trip, start by scheduling just precisely what you want out of the trip and how much you are eager to spend. Do it correct and you can have the fishing trip of a lifetime.

But why would you need to know anything about bait; maybe you catch your share, maybe you know a range of baits that have worked on your waters previously that you can turn to. Well if you know little about carp vital senses and how to manipulate them to induce more takes you are missing out; big-time and it’s like using putting back on the shelf a flavour with 10 times the potency of anther because the packaging is less flashy, and choosing another flavour that you like the smell of, never realising how much it lacks compared to the other flavour… For instance, many anglers just think flavours are solvent based or natural, or nature-identical and pretty much all the same, but the actual definition of flavours in fishing are extremely diverse and some flavours like chilli compounds even stimulate carp senses more powerfully than usual pulling fish to your swim from ranges many other flavours fail to.

Many secrets are hidden from our senses but uncovered very easily by a little messing about with baits and some very elementary science, for instance, many carp bait substances change when in water into different ones to those we experience as humans in air… Garlic releases that pungent smell when broken in air and we are all familiar with similar compounds from onions and chives for example. What a disappointment it was to eat the wheat-free foods and not want more! Although they still have all the same ingredients like the flavours, sweeteners and enhancers etc, something vital was missing that made me want to keep on eating and this is why I only had one doughnut; Homer Simpson would have been shocked to say the least! There was no key vital substance in the food to make my brain release a rush of feel-good hormones that occurs naturally in the wheat-based foods.

If you apply this to fishing, it is like using a bait with a flavour and sweetener, and fishing next to it a bait with the same ingredients exactly, but with that extra vital brain chemical releasing impact. Which food or bait will catch more fish and which might you go for preferentially?! As it is your brain the makes the decision for your body you may have no choice and you may have noticed that so many people over-eat wheat-based foods and store-up fat as a result despite this being far from a healthy thing to do; it’s natural drug-induced behaviour for sure, even though certain emotions are frequently still involved!

When you look, you won’t believe how hard it is to get away from wheat in your diet as it is exploited so much in modern foods to get you to eat more and buy more in regular, habitual ways! Carp and catfish often live in the same waters and are targeted by anglers fishing in similar ways for each so I’ll place these together. A good reason to use catfish and carp together as examples of tongues that swim is the sheer number of physical similarities in substance detection and also their shared quite similar essential nutritional needs that often means the same bait design can catch both; and very big ones too! Many anglers know little about the specifically adapted cells in and outside of fish that enable them to detect substances in water on a chemical level even down to a few parts in a million or even billion, and this is one of the most powerful aspects of fish we can exploit with our baits to make them far easier to catch!

I always laugh when I see someone sniffing a bottle of flavour, or tasting a bait, because this is really a measure of personal preference, rather that scientific testing of how a substance actually triggers feeding intensity or not in water, plus our senses are dulled compared to fishes by a gigantic percentage; these are the bloodhounds of the water world! We taste and smell using specially adapted cells in our tongues and noses; these have wet surfaces at all times to enable use to detect substances effectively in air, but fish evolved such cells all over their bodies, as well as internally, so they are like big tongues really. Specialist fish cells are part of many vital sensory input systems are found in various areas of concentration and cell forms; for detection of various substances, and other input information, like water temperature and pressure waves from your lead almost hitting them etc!

Carp find many potential food substances including your baits by using cells adapted for the purpose which are extremely sensitive to essential substances especially, like various combinations of amino acids. The highly adapted cells in carp and other fish will often detect things humans cannot detect and often carp will appear to behave appropriately in advance of certain changing weather patterns, changing air pressures and temperature changes etc, and water density and pressure changes may be involved more than we might think.

Carp and catfish have barbels; the highly sensitive projections around the mouth that in one role, help them find food and these have some of the highest densities of cells adapted for receiving chemical feedback from the water in solution. Your bait substances imbibe water or dissolve in water to form solutions. These substances have a highest concentration nearest their source and this gets weaker as you travel away from it.

Fish are able to detect these solutions and home in and follow the concentrations back to where they are highest and so find your free baits and hook baits for example.
