Shar Pei Mixed Breeds: Smaller Versions
When there is cross breeding the result could be a multi-generation cross, as more than half the purebreds are not totally pure. The Shar Pei mix can be a cross breeding with a Basset Hound or with a Pug. The Shar Pei mix with the Basset Hound is called the Ba-Shar and is a recognized breed with the American Canine Hybrid Club.
Cross breeding implies that the new breed adopts the characteristics of the parent breeds. Hence one can understand the temperament of a cross breed, if you know the temperament of the parents.
Another common Shar Pei mix is with the Basset Hound, which gives birth to the Ba-Shar (Sharp Asset). The best way to check out the temperament of a mixed breed is to check all breeds of the cross. Only then is it possible to know any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. The American Canine Hybrid Club has recognized the Ba-Shar as a hybrid dog. Many of the dogs that are being bred are only fifty percent purebred. So the result could actually be a multi-generation cross.
In order to breed a healthy population of dogs, a large gene pool is imperative. This ensures an abundance of genetic variation. This automatically ensures a competition of the genes, which can be randomly selected. In this way gene frequencies can be conserved. The breeding of the Shar Pei is within a small gene pool and so the dog is becoming problematic both in temperament and structure. In order to overcome such problems a new flow of genes from the original type is necessary.
But the Shar Pei mix with other dogs like the Black Labrador or another Shepherd Mix is definitely an advantage. The Shar Pei features are always more prominent when it is cross bred with these dogs, and you can see the extra skin and wrinkles and immediately identify the hybrid dog as a Shar Pei mix. It is generally shy, but once it gets familiar with you, it is very loving and gentle.
The kennel clubs today have introduced some strict rules regarding breeding. This discourages people to take in new genetic materials from the original stock. The kennel clubs insist that by isolating genes the purity of the breed is preserved, and not by preserving genes in population.
Only a knowledgeable breeder who does the right selection of the breeds should undertake the breeding of any two purebreds. Since his aim is hybrid vigor he pairs the two breeds together to add genetic diversity, so that if one or other of the breeds suffers from some inherent diseases, they can be bred out. Normally a cross breed like the Shar Pei mix has a long and healthy life.
The Chinese Shar Pei and the Shar Pei cross breeds are eligible for accident coverage with insurance companies. Only if the American Canine Hybrid Club recognizes the mixed breed is it accepted and popularized by all.
