Fishing For the Mighty Tarpon

Like a lot of fight in your fish? Well, the might Tarpon is just the fish for you. We are talking about a monster fish that can come in at over 200 pounds and give you a workout you will not soon forget.

When it comes to the perfect warrior fish, the Tarpon is high on the list. Bigger than a middle linebacker, they measure out as much as 280 pounds and eight feet in length. They also like a good fight, so warm up those shoulders and arms.

If I asked you what fish family a 200 plus pound fish with a length of up to eight feet would be in, you would probably come up with some good guesses. None of them would be the herring, but it is true. Yes, the might Tarpon is a herring.

Tarpon are resilient fish. They are one of the few fish that can survive the oxygen depleted zones in the water. They do so by surfacing and breathing directly from the air. It is a very odd site to see, something like a small submarine berthing if it is a big fish.

The tarpon is a mighty beast, but you can catch it with just about any tackle. The only key is to go with something heavy duty. A Tarpon will run and run while leaving you gasping. Make sure your gear can handle it.

For bait, the Tarpon is partial to squid. In fact, it is pretty ravenous around squid. It can also be receptive to shrimp and basic bait fish. It is a big fish, which means it needs to eat a lot and is not particularly finicky when it comes to food.

Ah, but there is something really special about the Tarpon. The habitat of the Tarpon is along the shoreline. It stays close in, which means it has limited routes to escape in. This results in lots of running and spectacular jumping.

Even better, the habitat of the Tarpon means everyone from experts to beginners can have a go at them. You just have to walk down to the water and start having at it. Some even fish from kayaks now.

If you are looking for a new experience and like a good fight, the Tarpon is about the best choice possible. It will fight and leave you wiped out, but with a huge smile on your face.
