Potential Shih Tzu Problems

Any animal that is adapting to a new life is going to give you problems and a Shih Tzu is no different in this area. You will probably start experiencing Shih Tzu problems almost immediately and the best way to deal with these problems is to understand why your dog is acting the way it is acting. Much of it is behavioral and in response to the things going on around your dog.

The Shih Tzu hates loud noises and a lot of clatter and commotion. They feel pressured and a lot of tension when there is something loud going on or a lot of people are running around.

This is one of the main reasons why Shih Tzu dogs are said to not be great dogs for kids. Of course not every dog is the same but for the most part the Shih Tzu is not a great dog for kids unless you take the time to train it very well- and it does take time.

Shih Tzu dogs descend from the dogs of Chinese royalty and it seems like every one that is born is born with that knowledge. They carry themselves very well but they are also stubborn and want everything to go their way, which causes Shih Tzu problems. It can take months to get them to do anything you want them to do, especially if they don’t want to do it. The best part is that they have no idea why they ever get punished so all punishment does is set back your training efforts another few months.

Shih Tzu dogs have little legs and are a toy breed. They love to run and play but they don’t cover a lot of ground doing it and they don’t need a lot of exercise to begin with so they won’t be looking to get a lot of play time, if any at all. If you want a jogging buddy, or someone to play Frisbee with in the park, then a Shih Tzu may not be the dog for you.

The most common of Shih Tzu problems is housebreaking. A Shih Tzu does not like dirt and grass so you have to find a nice concrete and clean place for them to go outside. Then if they decide they don’t want to go outside, or that housebreaking isn’t for them, then you are stuck with a long and frustrating ordeal.

Your only weapon is positive reinforcement and a lot of praise because if they don’t understand what you want then they will do whatever they want.

The Shih Tzu literally has a mind of its own. It is not waiting for you to teach it commands and train it, it is going to do whatever it wants to do and you have to figure out how to make sure that it listens to you on the things you want it to do. It is frustrating and never easy but if you love your little dog then it is very much worth it in the end because a Shih Tzu can be a very loyal and loving pet.
